A story lacks of sequence a little, but I should talk about “Hinoki / cypress / chamaecyparis obtusa” becoming materials of Baidarka’s framework.

Baidarka’s hull is consisted of many curves.

I have to find the correct tree which has the grain that matched a curve of the parts.

A local old woodsman takes me to forest, and we look for the cypress tree that a source bent greatly. When I reach a suitable tree, at first I stand under that and try to imagine parts of baidarka in that. Then we cut down the tree gently, and start it from the forest, and tear of the bark. To prevent sudden drying, painting with the wax in a section of a tree is necessary.

And I take care of the tree in a shade to calm and dry slowly. This cypress is because the length that lived as a tree, will live again as a Baidarka .

These planks of cypress are idle for another five years, now it’s time to wake’em up soon!

I think about affinity with Spruce becoming other parts, and carefully I pick material from them.

From these planks of cypress, keel, deck beams, deck stringers, bow, stern parts will be cut.

How Aleut people would get tree which form their baidarka’s framework?

A big enough tree does not grow wild to make it in Aleutian islands.

Only drift wood which come over from Russian coast and southern Alaska was available material. They become fallen trees and go on a trip with a river, and appear in the sea and get on an ocean current, and finally drift to Aleutian islands as drift woods. Or, there is a possibility that they come from south as trade products. People might tow them flowing through offshore by their baidarka and take them to village.

At all events, it is certain that tree was valuable around severe environment of north.Baidarka, might be beyond a general idea of property we know. I think that it was a thing such as a Pride of Aleutian people.

1: Shaking and investigating states
of 2 gunwale strakes

You must choose gunwale strakes in consideration of weight and grain of wood, and curve. Then plane and finish them on 3.5×2.2cm square lumber.

Next, more complicated and delicate observation of materials will be demanded. I try to find out 2 gunwale strakes which have same curve and rolling. Then I can find Front and Back, Top and Bottom, Inside and outside of strakes.

This observation and consideration of materials will be most important part of building Baidarka. With out this, you will end up built a baidarka just in a form, but totally different property and performance. He becomes a Baidarka which forgot to acquire wisdoms of Aleutian paddler.

Finding out of gunwale strakes front and back

2: With a principle of a see-saw,
I am trying to feel the center of
weight

Mark the center of length. And mark the center of weight (gravity point). Since weight is delicately different by a property of grain, finding out the gravity point of strakes is important. Then light side will be the Bow, and heavy side aft.

Because, baidarka is the boat that bow-cockpit side is always longer than cockpit-stern side. If you made mistake in this consideration of trim, your craft will be the one hard to operate in the sea!

Top and bottom of gunwale strakes

2.2cm side of strake will be horizontal side of gunwale. 3.5cm side will be vertical.
Since the hull of baidarka is flexible, it warps by weight of paddler and ballast on the water.

Therefore, the center of a strake rises, and front and back fall down, it is right top and bottom of gunwale.

again shake, try to find out an ideal
combination

Inside and outside of gunwale strakes

Gunwales of baidarka curve towards the outside gently. And there is less degree of curve than other traditional type of North.

You must find a right pair, which front and back detach each other, and center part touch. It is an ideal combination, but 2 straight strakes which have little curve towards outside in front and back will be all right.

I will tell the reason later.

4: 2 gunwale strake tips. Front warps below a bit, back rises.

5: These two warps towards left. Not good pair.

6: The center of strakes slightly spread out. If you are going to build a kayak which strongly set gunwales in an outside direction, this pair will be an ideal.

7: Front and back of strakes detach and the center touches each other.Aleutian baidarka seems to like this pair.

8: Also consideration direction of tree is very important.

In this picture, top right corner of the left strake is the center of a tree, and lower left is the bark side. The right strake is totally reverse. Never use the combination such like this! If you do not want to build a craft that the backbone was twisted

9: A symmetric annual ring. Kayak needs this combination.

A story changes a little.

I have gotten drank with Aleutian fishermen who came from Saint Paul, isolated Pribilof islands when I was in Alaska. But unfortunately I have not been to Aleutian islands yet.

I have taken so long time to look for the overseas monograph, and ask native people and researcher of North America for teaching. And I have built innumerable traditional kayak and canoe.

But in this project, basically I am telling things what I learned from my own experience not what I read and heard.

I mean, I am telling what I learned from Baidarka, or wisdom and mind of Aleut that I can sense through my working.

I can not say like “decide the front and back, top and bottom…”. For me it is not an act like “finding out”, not decide. Because it is not me to decide, always wood and bidarka decides things by themselves.

I take days and seasons to try to make conversation with baidarka and wood.

I guess a law of nature. I obey it, then the way becomes clearly. I always build baidarka in this way.

For building baidarka, we need to live slowly, while thinking and scaling about the depth of wisdom that we have already forgotten in this civilization’s manic speed.
